An Accra High Court has reviewed upwards a bail condition that is set to worsen the plight of former GREDA boss Dr Alexander Tweneboah who is said to be involved in a Simbox fraud. The court presided over by Judge Effia Asare Botchwey on Tuesday slapped a GH¢200,000 bail condition on the suspect, an increase of more than 100 per cent of an initial bail bond set by a Magistrate Court. The Magistrate Court last week set a GH¢50,000 bail bond with two sureties, one to be justified. He is accused, together with five others, of engaging in a Simbox fraud which has led to the country losing millions in revenue. He was said to have met the bail condition and was set to enjoy temporary reprieve but the Chief Justice Georgina Woode instructed that the docket be moved from the Magistrate Court to the High Court. That appears to have changed the dynamics of his bail condition. Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah reported the judge as saying that the review of the bail condition has become necessary because of the enormity of the crime said to have been committed by Dr Tweneboah and his friends. According to the judge, the country has lost about GH¢900,000 as a result of the alleged criminal activity. Until he meets the reviewed bail condition he will not enjoy his temporary freedom. According to Afreh Nuamah, lawyers of the suspect are conferring with the court clerks to see how best they will be able to meet the bail condition.
